Mom & Kids Adventure Time

Sunday, I awoke around 6:30 a.m. because I couldn't move; Everest was sleeping on my legs. I pushed him over and was able to sleep for another couple hours. We were well on our way to making it to church on time, when suddenly I looked at the clock and realized it was 10:20. There was no way we were going to make it to second service.

Instead, we sat at the table and did a Take 10 devotional. The kids always enjoy those! It was a lovely way to get the day started too. After the bad ending last night, I was determined that today would be different. Julie suggested that we do some kind of craft together, and that ended up being paper plate masks. We all sat down to make them together, which was super fun. I do like doing crafty stuff, but it's not usually my first choice if I'm looking for something to do.




We decided to take a walk afterward. Everybody loaded up their backpacks with various supplies, and we took the long way to the shopping center, by way of the playground. The kids played for a little while there, then we were on our way again.




The pet store came first, where we saw some ADORABLE baby corn snakes. It really made me rethink the whole thing about having a caged animal. They were so cute and tiny. SO tempting. Still, they live up to 15 years (according to the store), and that's a big commitment--not one we can make too hastily.



I had a couple dollars leftover from the carnival, so I gave one each to Julie and Everest to spend at the craft store. They hunted for what seemed an eternity until both of them found something they liked. We continued on, stopping to look at pumpkins in front of the grocery store before going to Subway for a late lunch.





The kids were totally exhausted from all the walking and activity from the day. By time we got home, all they wanted to do was lay on the couch. Julie took her shower, then joined Everest in watching The Sword in the Stone. Meanwhile, I took care of a bunch of house cleaning stuff, even though I was just as tired.

They moved on to another movie, but after awhile, Everest joined me to make some pumpkin cookies. He had a fun time stacking all the ingredients, then got to taste batter and later, cookies. They turned out wonderfully!




Best of all, Heath arrived home while they were in the oven, coming home to the smell of freshly baked cookies. Aaaah. He helped get the kids in bed, which was awesome and so much smoother than the night before. We hung out for a bit, debriefed on our weekends, then I came up here to write blog posts. It's about time to turn n though. I thought I was going to go to bed earlier than this!

Spontaneous Adventures

What a weekend! Friday started out relaxed and normal. Everest and I played together in the morning since he didn't have school. We also straightened up the bedrooms and got everything folded. I tried to get Everest to take a little nap, but he wanted to just sit in bed and practice writing. Eventually he did fall asleep.



When Heath got back from working, Everest was up again, and we hung out. We chatted about having an impromptu family day because Heath was going to be gone all weekend. Meanwhile, Everest wanted to take pictures of us. Silly boy. :o)




After my young men got Julie, we headed out to the zoo. Unfortunately, they closed early because of an event that night. Not be deterred, we went to a park to play for awhile, then got some donuts. (Sort of a necessity every time we're downtown!)






On the way home, we decided to have dinner at Fargo's Pizza, an absolutely wonderful place that seems like its been around forever. Both Heath and I remember going there as kids. It was neat to get to share the place with our own kids. Julie said it was the best place we'd ever gone for dinner. :o) On the way out, we did the photo booth in the arcade area.





It was a lovely family day, even if it did end up spilling past bedtime. Heath and I had some much needed time together after we put the kids to bed. Later in the evening, I caught a movie with Legolas--Rise of the Planet of the Apes, which was actually quite good. Totally new take on the story and well-done CGI. All in all, it was a great but exhausting day.

All Fun, All the Time

Saturday turned into one of those non-stop family fun days. We started out by taking a trip to the pumpkin patch--the same one Everest went to for his field trip. We thought Julie could use her own pumpkin, and in fact, they each got one extra small one. I picked out one too. It was such a fun time! $4.00 for four little pumpkins and a morning of memories; that's quite a steal.






We split ways with Heath after the pumpkin patch so he could go rock climbing, then headed to the church to print bulletins. It didn't take long before we were done and on our way to the university up the street, where they were holding a free, open-to-the-public science festival. It was fantastic fun! The kids and I had a blast, and we didn't even see half of the exhibits. As an added benefit, we saw Puella and EE (one of the CP girls), who are both students at the college.








After the science festival, we stopped to get a snack, then went to the Arc to see what costumes were out for Halloween. I can't believe how lucky we were! Julie found a perfect princess dress, and Everest found a skeleton costume that fits him perfectly. They had a bit leftover in their budget and were able to get some accessories to go with their costumes.




We reunited with Heath at home and quickly decided to do one dinner fling. We did just come across payday after all. *whistle* It was a cheap date though, KFC, but the picnic location was definitely high speed--Garden of the Gods! Super fun time together, even though I did get gravy spilled on my pants. Ugh. Oh well.





Ah, wouldn't it be lovely if every Saturday could be this way? All fun with none of the work? SUCH a fun day.
